Puja is a religious ritual undertaken by most Hindus in India. It comes in a variety of forms and functions, but all are common in giving praise and worship to a deity in return for blessings and knowledge. This Puja was celebrated by the Rajasthani nomadic people in Manali, India. For this, they worshiped the Goddess Dashama, the destroyer of adversity, for ten days. Daily fasts, and tranced dancing by night hoped to bring her wisdom and spirit into their own bodies and minds. On the tenth night, devotees forgo sleep and continue the worship and dance until just before daybreak. A procession is formed from their camps in the hills above, through the town, and to the river, where the likeness of Dashama is retired and given back to the elements.
